Important information for the New Zealand Youth Games

26 November 2013 9:07am

Opening Ceremony

The Opening Ceremony will take place from 6pm, Friday 6th December at Claudelands Arena (Heaphy Terrace, Hamilton East) and will finish at approximately 7.30pm. We recommend that you arrive no later than 5.30pm due to the high level of attendance expected.

All students attending the Opening Ceremony should be dressed in their school uniform (either formal or sports) and each school should have a banner/flag to identify themselves during the athlete’s parade (which will occur at the beginning of the Ceremony – instructions for the parade will be given on arrival). Parking for the Opening Ceremony is via Gate 4 (Brooklyn Road) where you will be greeted by a member of the U Leisure team.

During the Ceremony, there will be a wide range of speakers and entertainment, including NZYG Olympic Ambassador Nathan Cohen (with whom there will be an autograph session immediately after the Ceremony). There will also be a performance from 2013 Waikato RockQuest winners “All of a Kind”.

We would like to ask schools to RSVP with a confirmation of attendance and an approximate number of students who will be attending the Opening Ceremony. Please send this confirmation to Kayleigh Farquhar kayleigh@uleisure.co.nz 07 838 4664.

Games Village

The Games Village will be the heart of the NZYG and will be located within the Claudelands Arena. The Games Village will be open from 8am daily from Thursday 5th through until Sunday 8th.

In order to be able to take advantage of the various facilities on offer within the Games Village, you will need to be wearing your NZYG wristband (which athletes will receive upon registration with their sport). Parking for the Games Village is via Gate 8.

Further Information

For those arriving from out of town, you will receive information about local activities on offer during registration. There will also be representatives from Hamilton who will have an i-site display within the Games Village.

Upon arrival you will also receive an event booklet which will provide detailed information about the NZYG and the various events happening across the Games. However, if you would like any further information at this stage, please contact the following:

T-Shirts

23 November 2013 9:57am

T-shirts are available to order from the Youth Games organisers. The mock ups of the T shirts/singlets look very good and we encourage athletes to order. There is a Youth Games only version and one that is specific to the Track, Field and Road Race championships which includes the NZSSAA logo and words about the championships being in Hamilton 2013. Order before Sunday to get them before the games, otherwise any orders after Sunday will be posted out after the event.

Summer Steeplechase Workshop

20 November 2013 9:51pm

Are you a middle distance runner keen for a bit of a change? Steeplechase is very undeveloped as an event group in New Zealand and is a great alternative for anyone with experience racing middle distance or cross country who is interested in exploring another discipline.

Athletics NZ will be conducting a workshop for athletes and coaches in conjunction with the Lovelock Classic in Timaru. The workshop itself will begin at 2pm Friday 3 January, with an opportunity for athletes to compete the following day over 2000m or 3000m steeplechase distances. A second session and meeting is to be scheduled in conjunction with the Porritt Classic with details to follow shortly. Some funding is available to assist in travel for those who compete at both the Lovelock and Porritt Classics.

Contact Athletics NZ Performance Coach Maria Hassan for more details. mariah@athletics.org.nz 021 226 6874
