Australian Cross Country Championships

9 June 2016 10:20am

NZSSAA intend to again take a full Secondary Schools team to the Australian Cross Country Champs this August.

This would include athletes in the following teams:
  • New Zealand Girls team – Up to 12 female runners from throughout the country
  • New Zealand Boys team – Up to 12 male runners from throughout the country

Team selection will largely be based on results of the 2016 National Secondary School Cross Country Champs in Rotorua, although other performances may be taken into consideration. A Paper Team of 12 female and 12 male Athletes will be announced at the completion of the meet in Rotorua. Those named in the Paper Team will gain automatic selection to attend the Australian Champs as part of the NZ team and will also be eligible to apply for a Travel subsidy of up to $NZ300. Others who are not named in the Paper team are also eligible to apply for consideration for selection to the team.

Mt Smart no longer available for the Track, Field and Road Race Championships, December 2-4 2016

6 June 2016 7:47pm

The Athletics Auckland booking of Mt Smart Stadium for these championships has been cancelled by Auckland City Council in order to hold the Cold Play concert there that weekend. Trying to find a suitable alternative in Auckland is proving to be very difficult with two of the tracks lacking the necessary infrastructure to hold a major championships and the Waitakere Trusts Stadium already booked for another event (the track is also being resurfaced).

Massey Park in Papakura has emerged as the only possible alternative but it is also due for a track resurfacing this summer. Discussions are being held to see if this can be delayed until after the first weekend in December and we are hopeful of a positive outcome very soon. This will be very unsettling for those of you who have already made accommodation arrangements and paid deposits but should we be successful in obtaining Massey Park your arrangements should still be reasonably suitable. Being in ahead of the demand for accommodation generated by the concert could turn out to be an advantage in the end. There is however likely to be pressure on accommodation in the Papakura area as there is a Tag Football tournament being held quite close by at Bruce Pulman Park that weekend.

A final option is to bring the Championships to Porritt Stadium in Hamilton which is approximately an 1 hour and 30 minutes by road south of Central Auckland but we are hoping that will not be necessary. We will confirm the venue as soon as possible.

Timed Programme & Traffic Information

2 December 2015 12:08pm

Update: The timed programme has been updated. Changes and possible changes are highlighted in yellow. ‘Out’ means the heats, quarters or semi finals are not required and the highlighted numbers mean there has been a change in the number of heats.

The timed programme is now available. Please note the Open Girls and Boys 300m Hurdles and the Junior Boys 100m hurdles are unlikely to require semi finals but this will be confirmed at the managers’ meeting. The 1st round heats will be run at heat time not semi final time.

Traffic Information

There are major road works being undertaken just south of Temuka, north of Timaru, with, at times, long delays, we not sure if it will be happening Saturday, but definitely happening Friday.

An alternative route to the Timaru track if you are heading south on State Highway 1 from Temuka, Geraldine, Ashburton, Waihi Boys etc, is turning off State Highway 1 just over the second bridge south of Temuka, onto Arowhenua Pleasant Point Highway, approx 500 few meters down the road you turn left onto Levels Plain Road, (signposted to airport), follow this to the very end, passing the airport on your left, to Pleasant Point Highway (State Highway 8), turn left onto the highway and either carry on to Washdyke and State Highway 1 or else a Km or so down Pleasant Point Highway as your head east towards Timaru, you will sign a signpost directing you to Timaru West (Cartwrights Road), which you can take, follow this, turn left onto Rosewill Valley Road, and continue on this road which becomes Kellands Hill Road, travel up the hill, and this will take you all the way to Pages Road, turn left, then right onto Morgans Road which you follow until you reach Aorangi Park on your right.

Leading athletes at the New Zealand Secondary Schools are once again invited to tour and compete at the classic meetings in January 2016.
The Tour is built around the late January classic meetings in the lower north island. Athletes over the past two years have indicated that taking part in the whole tour is both advisable and rewarding.
