Possible Programme Switch for Steeplechase/3000 metres heats at NZSS Track,

23 September 2010 12:04pm

A suggestion has been made that the Open Girls and Open Boys Steeplechase heats, currently scheduled for late on Saturday morning be switched with the Junior Girls and Senior Boys 3000 metres heats which are scheduled for late in the day on Saturday.

The advantage of the shift is that the 3000 metres athletes will have longer to recover between their possible heats and their finals on Sunday. For those who do not qualify for the final it gives longer recovery before taking part in the road race the next morning if that’s what they decide to do. It is rare that heats are held in the Steeplechase and also quite common that the 3000 metres, particularly the Junior Girls, do not require heats either.

Comment on this possible change is invited. Please email oe@nzssaa.org.nz with your thoughts.

Due to the addition of a separate AWD race the programme published in the newsletter has been pushed back to the following times.

  • AWD Combined 10.30am
  • Year 9 Girls 11.00am
  • Year 9 Boys 11.30am
  • Junior Girls 12.00pm
  • Junior Boys 12.30pm

  • Senior Boys 1.30pm
  • Medal Ceremony 3.00pm. This will now be held Paraparaumu Memorial Hall, Tutanekai Street, Paraparaumu. The hall has a capacity of approximately 450 people and while we like as many as possible to come to the medal ceremony, on this occasion it will be difficult to accommodate everyone.

Additional opportunity available for AWD athletes

21 May 2010 8:11pm

There will be an Open AWD Combined Category 2 km cross country race held at the start of the programme at 10.30 am. AWD athletes may be entered in that event if they consider it is a better option for them rather than competing in the age grade races. AWD athletes must choose between the 2 options though. They cannot do both events. Athletes competing in the open race must have turned 13 prior to the 31st of December 2010 and be under 21 at the same date.

Course and Map

21 May 2010 8:11pm

The course is mainly on a hard sand and peat base, quite flat on the clear grassed areas but undulating and quite demanding over the rest of the course. Bare feet are not recommended although athletes used to running barefoot may decide to do that. Come prepared with shoes though just in case. There are 2 substantial equestrian hurdles per lap although one of them is relatively low depending on the running line taken and the other can be climbed over easily if necessary.
