Obituary of Rodney Gordon, March 22 1967 - April 18 2022

27 April 2022 2:00pm

It is with sadness that NZSSAA pays its respect to a man who has made a significant impact on our sport. Rodney was not only an inspirational teacher of economics at Auckland Grammar School for over 30 years but led the Grammar distance running program from the 1990s until recently. During that period Grammar were a dominant force in New Zealand Secondary Schools Cross Country and Road Race Championships winning many titles. His leadership and organisational qualities, along with his friend and colleague Brien ‘Toad’ Mcrea, made that success the benchmark for other schools to aspire to. Rodney was a keen triathlete who represented New Zealand at age group championships. After a long and determined battle with cancer Rodney passed away on Easter Monday. He is survived by his wife Susanna and two sons Jack and Tom. RIP Rodney Gordon.

14 February 2022 2:00pm

The South Island Secondary Schools Athletics Championships, due to be held on April 1-3 in Invercargill, have been cancelled due to the difficulties of holding an event under the restrictions of the Covid Protection Framework and concern for the safety and wellbeing of everyone likely to be involved.

The North Island Secondary Schools Athletics Association Championships, due to be held on April 2-3 in Palmerston North, have been cancelled for Term 1. Consideration will be given to holding them later in the year if Covid-19 circumstances change enough to allow them to proceed.

Congratulations to our athletes who have been selected to represent the New Zealand Secondary Schools Athletics Association at the Potts, Cooks and Capital Classics in early 2022. They have achieved very well to gain selection and we wish them every success in Open competition and in the specific Athletics NZ championships being held at these events.

NZSSAA Team at the Classics, January 2022

8 November 2021 6:10pm

NZSSAA are pleased to announce that following the NZSSAA Track and Field Championships in Inglewood a team will be selected to compete as a New Zealand Secondary Schools Team at the Potts and Cooks Classic Meetings in late January with a further opportunity to compete at the Capital Classic and the Sola Power Meeting in the New Zealand singlet over the weekend following the Tour.

The Association recognises the lost opportunities for overseas competition due to the pandemic and are making a considerable financial investment in the Tour which gives the annually selected a paper team a chance to compete as a national team.

Please note that the list of all events to be contested should be available by late October.

CANCELLATION: Track & Field and Road Championships and Athletics NZ Under 18 & Under 16s

27 October 2021 9:30am

It is with regret we announce the cancellation of the NZSSAA Track & Field and Road Championships due to be held in Inglewood, Taranaki from December 16-18. Owing to earlier issues with Covid this event was to be a dual Championships in association with Athletics NZ’s delayed Under 18 Championship and a trial Under 16 event.

New Zealand Secondary Schools Track & Field and Road Championships and Athletics NZ Under 18 and Under 16 Championships

2 September 2021 9:00am

NOTE: This event is now cancelled

As a result of the change in the dates for the commencement and conclusion of the NCEA Examination Timetable a decision to change the dates of the championships to be hosted in Inglewood has been taken to now begin on Thursday December 16 and finish on Saturday December 18.

The NZSSAA Executive and Athletics NZ are very aware of the keen desire to hold the championships, if at all possible and are very grateful to the Taranaki Local Organising Committee for being prepared to do their best to achieve that outcome.

Except for the Day/Date changes the Guideline Programme will remain as published except that the first day of the championships now begins an hour earlier with all events on day one of the programme advanced accordingly.

The dates published in Newsletter 1, including the opening, and closing of entries, will be delayed by approximately two weeks, and will be updated in Newsletter 2.

In reaching this decision NZSSAA has worked closely with School Sport NZ, and we thank them for their support. Their announcement concerning all sanctioned events affected by the change is published below.
