2021 Hughes Memorial Cross Country Race

29 May 2021 9:00am

The Hawera Harrier Club invite you to the 2021 Hughes Memorial Cross Country Race:

Looking for something to do this Queen’s Birthday weekend? Come along to South Taranaki and join in one of the greatest Cross Country races around. This race is run over farmland with hills, mud and jumps and is always enjoyed by competitors. In 2021 this will be the course for the New Zealand Secondary Schools Cross Country Champs, so an awesome opportunity for high school students to come and check the course out. This is also a great course for spectators to access and see lots of racing. The Hughes Memorial is well known in the Taranaki, Manawatu and Whanganui areas not only for the great course and competition but also the amazing afternoon tea, hot soup and prizes. So gather up a group and come along for a fun weekend away – while you’re here you can visit the mountain (several family friendly walking/running tracks), the beaches, the cafes, the museum or head off to another town in the region. Attached is the flyer with all the information you should need and the entry form. Here’s the basics:

  • Saturday 5th June 2021, A & P Showgrounds, Hawera.
  • First race 1:00pm.
  • When entering please include estimated times (for walkers) and date of birth (for runners).
  • If you’re staying the weekend let me know if you would be interested in joining an organised recovery run on Sunday morning.
  • Registered members compete in club uniform, high school students in school uniform.
  • For the teams event – only registered club members or High School Students will be counted. High school aged competitors will need to decide if they want to run for club or school. As this is the first year allowing non-registered runners it is a trial, if it works we may consider teams events for them in future years. High School students will be eligible for non team prizes – 1st, 2nd, 3rd and spot prizes.
  • Entries are $8 and close 8pm Thursday 3rd June (pre-entry preferred but late entries accepted on the day until 12:50 – $10).
  • I will accept entries on forms other than the one attached as long as they are typed (not handwritten) and have all the information required.
  • For this year only course, distances and age grades have changed slightly to align with those of the NZSSAA, this will allow us a “test run” for the secondary schools nationals and will give high school students a chance to run the course.
  • Please note – competitors eat free, non-competitors a small $2 to help us cover some costs.

If your club is busy this year, add it to next year’s calendar – Queen’s Birthday weekend every year.

All orders made via schools have been posted to the school. Don’t forget to ask the sports co-ordinator for your merchandise when you are back. NZSSAA Track, Field and Road Race Championships 2021 Date Change

12 January 2021 7:00pm

These championships were scheduled to be held in Inglewood on December 10-12 but provision was there to bring them a week earlier and back to our normal pattern of having them on the first Friday and the first weekend of December. This was the preference adopted at the NZSSAA AGM and subsequently accepted by School Sport NZ. They will now be held on December 3-5 in Inglewood.

By making this change we are avoiding a clash with the NZSS Touch Championships as occurred this year which will be of benefit to both sports and it does make it possible to attend the Australian All Schools Athletics Championships should COVID-19 travel restrictions allow for that.

Examinations are due to end on December 2 so it is possible a small number of athletes will have to be prepared to take their final exam at an alternative examination centre in Taranaki. Information on the possible available centres will be made available later in the year.

Note: Exams on December 2 include: L1 Social Studies (also offered digitally), L2 Dance, L3 Art History (also offered digitally), and Scholarship Earth & Space Science.
