NZ Sec School Champs Day 3

9 December 2012 11:09pm

Day 3 of the New Zealand Secondary Schools Track & Field Champs saw two further records fall to Matt Baxter from New Plymouth Boys High and Jesse Bryant of St Bede’s College.

Both were long-standing records, with Baxter’s 3000 metres time of 8 min 15.50 sec taking three seconds of the time set by Phillip Starr in 1991 and Bryant’s Long Jump of 7.36 metres equalling Nigel Park’s performance from 1990.

Talia Horgan from Cambridge High School had the satisfaction of reaching the World Youth selection standard for the woman’s 400 metres, with a time of 55.14 seconds, while Rosa Flannagan was well under the standard for the girls 3000 metres with her 9 min 38.26 sec.

They joined Matt Bloxham (Hammer) and Eliza McCartney (Pole Vault) who reached the standards earlier in the championships.

Zoe Hobbs from New Plymouth Girls High was the most prolific athlete at the champs with gold medals in the junior girls 100m, 200m and Long Jump, along with a silver in the triple jump.

Double victories went to Molly Florence, Rosa Flannagan, Paige Harwood, Siositina Hakeai, Jacob Matson, Sean Eustace, Alexander O’Neill and Matthew Bloxham.

More records on day 2 at NZ Secondary Schools Champs

9 December 2012 11:08pm

The New Zealand Secondary Schools Track & Field Championships continued Saturday in Dunedin with more records, World Championships qualifiers and other outstanding results.

Pole Vaulters Eliza McCartney and Nicholas Southgate both set Secondary Schools records in their respective events. McCartney, from Takapuna Grammar, cleared 3.85 metres to add five centimetres to the Secondary schools record with her third attempt. The record jump also equals the qualifying standard for the 2013 World Youth championships to be held in Donetsk, Ukraine.

Southgate, from Auckland’s Rosmini College, cleared 5.00 metres to add ten centimetres to his own boys schools record and equalled the New Zealand M18 record he already shared with Paul Gibbons. Southgate, who finished fifth at the 2011 World Youth Championships in France has set his sights on clearing 5.20 – 5.30 this season.

The third record of the day went to Discus thrower Siositina Hakeai (Auckland Girls Grammar) whose best of 56.27 metres bettered her own New Zealand W18 record twice during the competition and added a massive four metres to the previous Secondary Schools champs record. Hakeai, who finished fourth at the World Junior Champs in Barcelona earlier this year goes from strength to strength as she is compared to World and double Commonwealth Discus champion Beatrice Faumuina.

Orewa College’s Matt Bloxham, the Hammer throwing star of day one, featured again, this time in the Senior Boys Shot Put, shooting from 3rd position after five rounds to claim the title with a massive toss of 18.34 in the final round. He also added a bronze in the Senior Boys Discus to go with his two gold medals.

Sunday’s actions sees all of the track event finals and the Road Races as well as more field event finals.

At the conclusion of the championships on Sunday evening a team of 30 athletes will be named to contest the Australian Youth Olympics in January.
