Past Cross Country Results
A history of the NZSS Cross Country Champs is being collated in an effort to celebrate 40 years in 2013. Unfortunately two years, 1996 and 1998, are proving difficult to find results for. A request is now being made to previous teachers, parents, coaches and athletes in an attempt to complete a full set of results for these two years. Any results booklets or information for either the 1996 event in Nelson or the 1998 event in Christchurch for the top ten athletes in both the Junior and Senior grades as well as in the three- and six-person team events would be greatly appreciated. For the individual results the top ten finishers in all grades as well as the first, second and third place getters times are being sought. Any information can be emailed to b.smith@tbc.school.nz or oe@nzssaa.org.nz. |

North Island Champs Survey
A huge thank you to everyone who came last weekend to what was the biggest NISS meet for some time. We had tremendous fun hosting you. It was a very exciting weekend of athletics with new records set and wonderful examples of good sportsmanship and team spirit. We felt very blessed that the weather, while hardly tropical, was better than forecast. Our Athletics Wairarapa organising committee is currently undertaking a 360 review of the event and in particular, a root cause analysis of the difficulties experienced with the timing/recording system. We regret that despite best efforts, these difficulties could not be resolved in a timely manner, resulting in unacceptable delays for athletes and disruption to scheduling, particularly on Saturday afternoon. In compiling a detailed report, we hope to better understand the issues, and share the learning. Another expected outcome of our review will be the creation of an organisers’ NISS Handbook for our use next year, and for future event organisers. To assist us with the 360 review, we have created this survey. We would appreciate it if you could distribute this survey widely to athletes, team managers, coaches, officials, parents and spectators. A good cross-section of feedback would really help us to evaluate what went well, what could be done better, and what could be developed to further enhance the experience for everyone and promote the sport. Thanks to those who have already fed back ideas for consideration – these have ranged from wider entry gates and a disability ramp, to having a local accommodation ‘go-to’ person to help negotiate accommodation for visiting teams. Please take the time complete the online survey or if you prefer, contact me directly on 06 377 4959, 027 273 1154 or at arnoppstringer@gmail.com Thanks for your participation! Jill Stringer |

NZ Sec School Champs Day 3
Day 3 of the New Zealand Secondary Schools Track & Field Champs saw two further records fall to Matt Baxter from New Plymouth Boys High and Jesse Bryant of St Bede’s College. Both were long-standing records, with Baxter’s 3000 metres time of 8 min 15.50 sec taking three seconds of the time set by Phillip Starr in 1991 and Bryant’s Long Jump of 7.36 metres equalling Nigel Park’s performance from 1990. Talia Horgan from Cambridge High School had the satisfaction of reaching the World Youth selection standard for the woman’s 400 metres, with a time of 55.14 seconds, while Rosa Flannagan was well under the standard for the girls 3000 metres with her 9 min 38.26 sec. They joined Matt Bloxham (Hammer) and Eliza McCartney (Pole Vault) who reached the standards earlier in the championships. Zoe Hobbs from New Plymouth Girls High was the most prolific athlete at the champs with gold medals in the junior girls 100m, 200m and Long Jump, along with a silver in the triple jump. Double victories went to Molly Florence, Rosa Flannagan, Paige Harwood, Siositina Hakeai, Jacob Matson, Sean Eustace, Alexander O’Neill and Matthew Bloxham. |
