June 13 Christchurch Earthquakes and the Chilean Volcanic Ash Cloud

14 June 2011 12:00am

The NZSSAA Executive extends our sympathy and support to everyone in Christchurch who is suffering ongoing disruption to their lives and state of wellbeing and we hope that this latest phase of earthquakes settles quickly so that everyone can get back to a more normal, less tense way of life.

Although the earthquakes have been felt in Ashburton, the venue for our Cross Country Championships on June 18, there has not been any damage there to our knowledge and therefore the Championships will continue as planned. There may be issues for teams staying in Christchurch and managers are advised to check with their accommodation providers to confirm that there is no problem.

The disruption to air travel as a result of the volcanic ash cloud is clearly a problem for North Island competitors who intended flying into Christchurch. Several schools who have been booked on Jetstar have indicated they are putting alternative plans in place in case flights do not resume in time and will travel by vans and ferry instead. We wish to assure everyone that at the disruption to air travel from the ash cloud will not force the cancellation of the event so please continue with your efforts to reach Ashburton.

If you have any concerns or questions please email us at oe@nzssaa.org.nz or from friday onwards txt or phone John Tylden on 0272645030. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and keep you advised via the NZSSAA website of any change in plans.

Important Information for Managers of Teams to the NZSS Cross Country Championships

8 June 2011 9:34am

Replacement Runners/Grade Changes

In order to maintain the ability of a team to achieve a team score runners already entered by the close of entries who are then scratched may be replaced either by eligible runners already entered in another race or by new non entered runners. A form will be provided to managers to record these replacements/grade changes which must then be handed to Race Control. Where replacement runners have already been entered in another grade they run with their own allocated number and timing chip. If the replacement runner has not been previously entered they run using the number and timing chip of the runner they are replacing. There is no extra entry fee required for a replacement runner. The form can also be used for runners who have been entered in a grade incorrectly and who wish to compete in another grade. This process can occur right up to the start of the race if necessary but early notification of the changes makes the production of correct results easier.

NZSSAA team to Australian Cross Country Championships, Stromlo Forest, Canberra August 20

8 June 2011 12:00am

The NZSS Executive has decided to select a team to compete at the Australian Cross Country Championships being held in Canberra on August 20/21. The team will be made up from up to 12 male and 12 female runners selected from the top 12 runners in both Senior races at the NZSS championships being held in Ashburton on June 18. This will be a self-funded team. The cost per athlete is unknown at this stage but costings are being done and will be notified to prospective team members shortly after our championships. We will be attempting to make travel to the event and accommodation options as flexible as possible so that team members and family members who may wish to travel with them can make their own arrangements and take advantage of the best travel deals/use airpoints and stay with family/friends in Canberra. There will also be a travel and accommodation option organised by NZSSAA that team members can join if they prefer.

Runners who are registered with Athletics NZ need to be aware that there is a clash of dates with the NZ Road Race championships being held in Wellington which will mean having to choose which event to take part in. NZSSAA regrets this clash which has come about because of the decision to bring Athletics NZ events forward to avoid accommodation and travel difficulties during the Rugby World Cup. If runners are needed for their club and centre teams or have been planning to compete at the Road Championships then they should consider continuing with those plans. NZSSAA intends offering this opportunity next year and beyond.

NZSSAA is seeking to appoint two manager/coaches to look after the Team. Ideally the managers will be selected from teachers involved with school based cross country running but people other than teachers who also manage and train school teams are welcome to apply. Expressions of interest along with a brief resume with names and contact details of referees can be emailed to Geoff Shaw, Geoffrey.Shaw@tekura.school.nz . The closing date for the expressions of interest will be June 30.

Christchurch Earthquake, South Island and North Island Secondary School Champs

1 March 2011 3:52pm

On behalf of the members of above associations and all the members of the NZ Secondary Schools Athletics Association the NZSSAA Executive members extend our deepest sympathy and our support to all of those who have suffered as a result of the devastating earthquake in Christchurch on February 22nd. In particular we are thinking of our athletics friends and associates who have lost family members or have had their homes and livelihoods destroyed around them. We ask all who are involved with our sport to find ways of assisting the recovery of the people of Christchurch by helping in whatever way you can to help overcome the impact the earthquake has had on their lives.

As a consequence of the damage to the QE2 stadium track and facilities and the surrounding area the South Island Secondary School Athletics Championships have shifted to Timaru. Another problem for Canterbury has been the severe disruption to normal school programmes and there will be great difficulty in holding local championships or determining who might be selected to compete at the South Island championships. School Sport Canterbury is working on ways to overcome these difficulties.

The North Island Secondary Schools Athletics Championships will be held at Porritt Stadium in Hamilton. The order of events and the instructions to competitors are posted below and the information to regional team organisers will be sent out through the RSD’s on 7 March.
